away their position as a consequence.
The evil effects of this gas bombardment were felt even after the Division moved into the
Meuse-Argonne sector.  Major Earl T. Brown, regimental surgeon, claimed that the battalion was unfit
for duty, and upon examination, on October 18, three officers and 130 men were evacuated as post-gas
cases.  This made a total of approximately 300 men who were put out of action by the gas attack, not to
mention many others who were rendered unfit for the arduous duties of a soldier.
