The Efforts at a Presidential Unit Citation for the 90th Division
In January 1945, Major General Walton Walker submitted a request through the chain of command, for a Presidential Unit Citation to be awarded to the 90th Division, for its noble and superhuman efforts in crossing the Moselle River and the taking of the Fortress Koenigsmacker, during the previous autumn. But this has never taken place.
In recent years, 90th Division Commanders, MG David Bockel and MG Ron Sholar, and others, have retaken up the effort to finally get the Citation issued to these well deserving men.
90th Division History Officer, Major Keith Dover was tasked to get all the paper work and history together and put it in a form that is required for such a Citation, in an effort to re-present it and with luck, finally get it awarded to this illustrious unit.
Major Dover spent many days at the National Archives, the Pentagon and other locations in and around Washington gathering the information to be submitted.
The entire packet, was submitted to the Department of the Army. A copy was scanned and is presented here exactly as it was compiled, for the historians among you to peruse.
It consists of over 180 pages. Some of the pages in a section are duplicated in following sections as required application process.
I am placing the pages here as time permits, a little at a time, in order that you may see it a little more quickly than if I waited until it was totally completed. New pages will be added as time permits.
As of this posting, the documents are still crawling around the government offices, trying to land on the desk of someone who will approve this long overdue award.
Thanks to Major Dover, MG Sholar, MG Bockel, MG Doughty, MG Schofield and the many others who have relentlessly pursued this effort to recognize our Tough Ombres.
