"Blossomtime in Normandy" came to the
staccato accompaniment of whistling artillery rounds, whining rifle bullets,
the sharp crack of mortars on the beaches, and the angry stuttering voices
of a thousand emplaced guns. Overhead, fighters and bombers roared to their
targets, while offshore warships of the Navy pounded enemy defenses with
devastating fire.
